Presidents' Message Hello Ladies, We hope that 2012 has started out as a wonderful year for you. Those of us who were at Name Your Game had a wonderful time. The food was excellent, and everyone who attended seemed to enjoy themselves. Thank you to everyone who donated their time to work on this event and to those members who donated the doorprizes and those wonderful baskets. We had 43 members and 51 guests in attendance. We hope to see more members at our next event. Please remember our partnership with Marley Park Elementary School PTA to collect and donate "gently used" or new blankets to the homeless. The blankets can be any size. We will be collecting the blankets at our February 16th General Meeting. The students began their collection in January. Now it is our chance to contribute to this worthwhile cause. Our annual Book Sale is being combined with a small item garage sale this year. It will be held at Connie Johnson’s house, 14522 W. Ravenswood Drive, Sun City West. On Wednesday, February 29th, from 4-6 p.m., will be a wine and appetizers Open House for members and their special guests to socialize and purchase items. Please sign-up at the February 16th General Meeting to bring wine or an appetizer. Also we will need help on Monday, February 27th, at 9 a.m. to organize items for the sale. The public is invited to the sale on March 1st from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., and on March 2nd from 9 a.m.. until noon. Your books and small items can be dropped off at Connie’s house beginning February 8th. Just leave them at the front door. Remember, we cannot accept furniture, clothing, or holiday items. This month is Arizona’s Centennial celebration. NWV-AAUW, WVGS, and Marley Park Elementary School plan to participate in the Sun City West Parade on Monday, February 20th. For those of you who are not aware, the parade route will be about 1 mile in length, and Tony Orlando will serve as Grand Marshall. Not quite the Rose Parade, but pretty close. Don't forget to look at the Centennial pages on our branch website. There are many events such as the WVGS Centennial Celebration Sit-Down Luncheon with Historian, Jim Turner on March 15th (12:30 p.m.) at Palmbrook Country Club in Sun City. (Reservation form) Save these dates : Tuesday, March 6 at 9:30 a.m. -- New Members' Spring Gathering at Mary Kay Chester's house Thursday, March 22 at 2 p.m.-- High Tea -- at Ann Levig's house Wednesday, April 4 at 11:30 a.m. -- Book Review (Story of the American West -- Legends of Arizona -- Centennial Edition) by Carol Sletten and Eric Kramer) An un-official nickname for Arizona is The Valentine State (due to our statehood date of February 14th). There are two possible versions of how our state got its name. Contrary to what most of the country thinks, Arizona does not mean “arid zone.” It derives either from the Spanish version of the Pima Indian work for “little spring place,” or from the Aztec word, arizuma, meaning “silver bearing.” We all know that the bola tie is the official state neckwear, but did you know that Arizona is the only state with an official neckwear?
